Ahead of the Round of 32 fixture between Brazil and Japan, Hajime Moriyasu was asked how his underdog side planned to take on the powerhouse Brazil, and he shared his thoughts in response.

Coach Hajime Moriyasu began by stating: “It is only natural that Brazil earns worldwide high regard while Japan does not. Our target is to claim the FIFA World Cup trophy. Some may mock this ambition, yet we are utterly serious about it this tournament. Japanese people can only inch closer to a goal once they set it firmly in place.”
He went on to add: “We are dark horses in this competition. We hold full respect for Brazil, but just as we proved last year, we truly believe we stand a chance to beat them. We will strive to pull off a historic upset.”
Moriyasu also gave an update on midfielder Takefusa Kubo, who sustained a left knee injury in Japan’s opening group match against the Netherlands and has been sidelined ever since, confirming the winger will miss the clash versus Brazil: “Takefusa will not feature against Brazil, as he has not yet rejoined full-team training. I wish him a swift recovery, and he is stepping up his rehabilitation work day by day.”
