About Ligue 1Ligue 1 is France's professional football league and the top tier of France's football league system. It is managed by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), with 18 clubs participating, and operates a promotion and relegation system with Ligue 2. The season runs from August to May. Each club plays two matches against every other team in the league—one at home and one away—totaling 34 matches over the course of the season. Most matches are held on Saturdays and Sundays, with a few taking place on weekday evenings. Play is usually suspended for two weeks after the last weekend before Christmas and resumes in the second week of January. ![]() League HistoryLigue 1 was founded on September 11, 1932 as a national league and was converted to Division 1 a year after its establishment. It continued to operate under that name until 2002, when it adopted its current name. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Marseille was a dominant team, winning the league title four consecutive times from the 1988-89 season to the 1991-92 season, featuring English international Chris Waddle and Ballon d'Or winner Jean-Pierre Papin. In the late 1990s, the foreign club Monaco boasted players like Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet, both of whom later became among the most dominant strikers in Europe. In the 2000s, Lyon built a dynasty, winning seven consecutive titles (2002-2008)—an unprecedented achievement in French football. From 2009 to 2012, four different clubs won the league title in succession: Bordeaux in the 2008-09 season, Marseille in 2009-10, Lille in 2010-11, and Montpellier in 2011-12. During this era, Eden Hazard of Lille emerged as a star player in the league. ![]() Famous ClubsParis Saint-Germain is the most successful club, with 13 league titles. Saint-Étienne was the first club to win 10 titles. Marseille holds the record for the most seasons in the top flight with 73 seasons in Ligue 1, while Paris Saint-Germain has the longest consecutive stay in the league, with 51 seasons (from 1974 to the present). Nantes set the record for the longest unbeaten run in a single season (32 matches) and the fewest defeats in a season (one) during the 1994-95 season. Additionally, Nantes maintains the record of 92 consecutive home unbeaten matches from May 1976 to April 1981. Before the start of the 2023-24 season, the number of teams in the league was reduced to 18; in the 2022-23 Ligue 1 season, four teams were relegated to Ligue 2, with only two teams promoted from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1. The current champion is Paris Saint-Germain, who won a record 13th title in the 2024-25 season. Monaco has won the league title multiple times, and its presence in the league makes it a cross-border competition. ![]() Ballon d'Or WinnersIn Ligue 1, Lionel Messi and Jean-Pierre Papin each won the Ballon d'Or once, playing for Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille respectively, making Ligue 1 contribute a total of two Ballon d'Or wins. |
