According to front-page reports from multiple Brazilian media outlets, Santos FC will be without their star player, Neymar, in their crucial match against San Lorenzo de Almagro at the Vila Belmiro stadium on Wednesday (20th) for the fifth round of the Copa Sudamericana group stage.

Neymar suffered calf pain during Santos FC's recent defeat against Coritiba Foot Ball Club in the Brazilian league and was not even named in the squad for this South American continental tournament.

The Brazilian national team expressed deep concern over the edema in Neymar's calf and planned for him to undergo treatment at their training center; this situation sparked tense atmospheres just hours before the national team squad announcement.

As ESPN reported on Wednesday, Neymar developed an edema, a situation that has even alarmed the Brazilian national team, forcing them to adjust the star player's recovery roadmap ahead of the World Cup.

In addition to Neymar, Santos FC's left-back Gonzalo Escobar will also miss the clash at the Vila Belmiro stadium.

This match is of paramount importance to Santos FC, who currently sit at the bottom of Group D with only 3 points and must defeat the group leaders San Lorenzo de Almagro, who have 6 points, to keep their hopes of direct qualification alive.

It is worth noting that in the Copa Sudamericana, only the top team from each group qualifies directly for the knockout phase.

The second-placed teams in the group will need to play a playoff tie against the third-placed teams from the Copa Libertadores group stage to keep their championship aspirations alive.
