About Premier League

The Premier League is the top-tier football league under the Football Association of England, succeeding the Football League First Division. As one of "Europe's top five football leagues", it consists of 20 teams and is operated by the Premier League's governing body.

League History

Officially founded in February 1992, Manchester United claimed the first Premier League title. In 1995, the number of teams in the Premier League was reduced from 22 (at its inception) to 20, a format that has remained unchanged to this day. Typically running from August to May of the following year, each participating team plays 38 matches in total, facing every other team twice (once at home and once away). At the end of the season, the bottom three teams in the standings are relegated to the EFL Championship.

Current Situation

Since its rebranding in the 1992/93 season, 51 clubs have competed in the Premier League: 49 from England and 2 from Wales. Only six clubs have been ever-present, participating in every season: Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur. A total of seven teams have won the Premier League title: Manchester United (13 times); Manchester City (8 times); Chelsea (5 times); Arsenal (3 times); Liverpool (2 times); Blackburn Rovers (1 time); and Leicester City (1 time).

In May 2024, Manchester City became the first team to win four consecutive Premier League titles, making English football history. City won 6 league titles in seven years, surpassing the once-great teams of Liverpool and Manchester United.

The Premier League is the most-watched sports league in the world. Its matches are televised in 212 territories globally, with a potential audience of approximately 4.7 billion people. In the 2014–15 season, the average attendance at Premier League club stadiums exceeded 36,000, second only to the Bundesliga's 43,500. In early January 2018, UEFA released a 126-page statistical report on major European clubs, recording data on various leagues and clubs. In the 2016/2017 season, the Premier League ranked first in terms of total attendance, with a cumulative attendance of over 13 million.
