Thomas Frank has been sacked and is no longer the manager of Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham regard Mauricio Pochettino as the ideal candidate for their new manager and want to appoint the Argentine coach immediately. However, the 2026 World Cup could force the club to turn to alternative plans.

Tottenham sacked Thomas Frank after just eight months in charge, following an eight-game winless run in domestic competitions.

Pochettino, their former manager, remains highly rated by the Tottenham board and is their number-one target. But he is currently the manager of the United States men’s national team, with the World Cup starting in a few months, making his return complicated.

Tottenham’s key executives prefer Pochettino, believing he can reunite the club amid its current turmoil.

This means Tottenham may switch to a backup plan: appoint an interim manager first, then bring Pochettino back for a second spell after the World Cup this summer.

Tottenham lost to Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round and have no game this weekend. With only 11 days until the North London Derby against Arsenal, the club still has time to appoint a new boss.

Spurs are only 5 points clear of 18th-placed West Ham and face relegation pressure, needing a manager who can improve results straight away.

But Pochettino is under contract with the USMNT, making an immediate return to North London extremely difficult.

Following Manchester United’s example of hiring Carrick as interim boss after sacking Amorim could be Tottenham’s best short-term option.

Tottenham’s next fixtures include a match against Premier League leaders Arsenal, followed by away games at Fulham and a home tie with Crystal Palace.
