In the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, Chelsea Football Club hosted Paris Saint-Germain at home, and ultimately the Blues lost 0-3 to their opponents, being comprehensively defeated by PSG with an aggregate score of 2-8. During the match, an on-the-spot move by Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior sparked heated discussions among fans and was sharply criticized by several football legends after the game.

While the match was in progress, Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior quickly handwritten a tactical note on the sideline, then passed the note to Alejandro Garnacho on the field, attempting to convey on-the-spot tactical arrangements through this method and adjust the situation on the field. However, judging from the live footage and the players' reactions, Chelsea's players clearly did not approve of Rosenior's on-the-spot tactical arrangements, and even showed obvious confusion and resistance.
After the match, Italian legendary coach Fabio Capello gave an extremely direct evaluation of this incident, unceremoniously criticizing Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior for being "out of his mind".
"He must be out of his mind," Capello said. "What he did would even make his own players laugh, which is exactly what Chelsea players are thinking. Just look at Garnacho's expression when he received that note, as if he was saying: 'What on earth are you talking about???'" Capello further added, “When a manager makes wise decisions, players will fully cooperate, but when you arrange things like that, how can you expect others to get involved?”
Alessandro Costacurta, AC Milan legend, also publicly expressed his views, stating that after this incident, Garnacho must have developed strong doubts about his manager Rosenior. “I used to be a player too. If I had encountered this situation, I wouldn't have thought it was a way for the manager to win over players. Maybe this is a new trend now, but Garnacho's attitude (his disapproval of such arrangements) can be clearly seen from his expression.”
Paolo Di Canio, West Ham United legend and former Sunderland manager, interpreted it from another perspective, believing that this incident precisely represents a typical characteristic of the current generation of new coaches: they always want to prove that they have studied the game until the last minute.
"Look at Garnacho going on the field with that note. I was a bit old-fashioned when I used to coach, but these new-generation coaches now are sometimes almost like philosophers. It looks like a joke, but it's not. They firmly believe that even the attitude in the last few minutes is important," Di Canio said. “They firmly believe in this. I've seen many people do this even when their team is already trailing 0-3. They want to prove to the outside world that they have persisted in studying until the last minute of the game, which is the general style of the new generation of coaches. I can understand, but I would think: What on earth are you doing?”
