Prediction: Liverpool Wins
The teams played out a 1-1 draw in the reverse game back in December, ending an eight-year hiatus from the last time the fixture was played. Bookmakers have Liverpool as heavy favorites, but that will need some massive effort looking at Sunderland’s home record.
The hosts are the fourth-best performing home team and the only undefeated side at home this season. Both Sunderland and Liverpool are coming off defeats from the top two sides and will, each in their own right, view this as a winnable game.

Sunderland have lost twice in their last three league outings. They had lost just once in eight matches across all competitions before this run. After a shocking 3-1 loss away to West Ham, Regis Le Bris’ men regrouped in their next match as they welcomed lowly Burnley and won 3-0.
This would, however, be the same treatment they received next as they headed out to league leaders Arsenal this past weekend. The Black Cats have accumulated 36 points thanks to nine wins and nine draws. They are having an exciting return to the top flight despite the inconsistencies and are in the race for a place in Europe.
Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka is still sidelined and headlines a three-man injury report that also includes Bertrand Traore and Jocelin Ta Bi. Traore, who hasn’t played since returning from the AFCON with a knee issue, could be available for this match, though.
If the Burkina Faso star is passed fit, it will be a huge addition for the hosts in attack. Brian Brobbey has turned into their reliable option to lead the attack and is the club’s top scorer with five league goals. Wilson Isidor, Chemsdine Talbi, who scored in the reverse game, and Enzo Le Fee are other options in attack for Sunderland.

Liverpool are also coming off a loss that has continued their inconsistent run of results. Arne Slot’s men endured a disheartening defeat as they conceded twice in the last six minutes to fall 2-1 at home to Manchester City. They’ve now lost twice in their last four games and managed just four wins in the last 10 fixtures.
By Liverpool’s standards, this is not good enough, and it has jeopardized their top-four hopes. Mathematically in with a chance at challenging for the title, the defending champions’ realistic target is qualification for next season’s Champions League. With 39 points from 11 wins and six draws, the Merseysiders are five points from the top four.
Liverpool have a far longer list of absentees through injury and suspensions. Joe Gomez did not feature against City but is expected to be available for this trip after being out with a groin issue. Jeremie Frimpong, Alexander Isak, and Conor Bradley will miss this trip but will not be out for much longer.
The big miss for the Reds will be Dominik Szoboszlai, who is suspended after his red card over the weekend. With this suspension, Mohammed Salah may want to play a bigger role here.
Final Prediction:
Asian Handicap: Liverpool -0.5/1
European Handicap: Liverpool Wins
Predicted Scores: 0-2, 0-1, 1-2
Predicted Total Goals: 1, 2, 3
