PSG News

Just like last season, as they chase their first-ever Champions League trophy, Paris Saint-Germain failed to qualify automatically for the round of 16 this term. They finished 11th in the League Stage, winning just one game in the finals, and were forced into the knockout play-offs.

Since then, PSG have endured mixed results in Ligue 1: a narrow 1-0 away win over Le Havre, followed by a 3-1 home defeat to Monaco — their second league loss in two months, which has allowed second-placed Lens to close the gap at the top to just one point with nine games remaining.

PSG pair Fabian Ruiz (knee) and Quentin Ndjantou (hamstring) are sidelined with injuries, while Joao Neves has made progress in his recovery from an ankle issue that has kept him out of the last three matches and he could feature on Wednesday, pending a late fitness test. Enrique will weigh up whether to recall captain Marquinhos, who has been an unused substitute in the last two games, or stick with the pairing of Illia Zabarnyi and William Pacho at centre-back.

Chelsea News

Chelsea are one of six English clubs in the Champions League round of 16 this season. They ranked sixth among the 32 teams in the League Stage, winning five, drawing one and losing two of their eight games.

Since their dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Napoli in late January, the Blues have won five of their last nine games across three different domestic competitions (D2 L2). Most recently, they beat Aston Villa 4-1 in the Premier League, before overcoming Wrexham 4-2 after extra time in the FA Cup fifth round.

Head coach Liam Rosenior is tasked with building consistency over the coming months while juggling multiple competitions, as he looks to guide the Blues into the top five of the Premier League and mount a deep run in the Champions League — a trophy they last won in 2021.

As for Chelsea, Estevao Willian, Jamie Gittens (both hamstring), Levi Colwill (ACL) and Mykhaylo Mudryk (suspended) all remain sidelined, while Wesley Fofana (thigh) should be fit to return to the first XI and play alongside Trevoh Chalobah at centre-back.

Real Madrid News

On Wednesday, Real Madrid return to the Bernabéu, where they have won four and lost just one of their five Champions League home games this season, scoring 12 goals in the process — though that solitary defeat was against Man City in December, losing 2-1 on matchday five of the League Phase.

The Spanish giants have, in fact, lost each of their last four UEFA games against English opposition, but they have been beaten in only three of their last 25 Champions League home matches (W19 D3) against all clubs.

They should also take comfort from the fact that they have prevailed in 13 of their last 15 UCL last-16 ties, winning the first leg in 10 of their last 12 ties at this stage.

Key Real Madrid duo Kylian Mbappé (knee) and Jude Bellingham (hamstring) are both expected to miss Wednesday’s contest through injury, joining Rodrygo (ACL), Éder Militão (hamstring), Dani Ceballos and Álvaro Carreras (both calf) on the sidelines.

Eduardo Camavinga (dental) and David Alaba (calf) are both doubtful and will be assessed ahead of kickoff, but Dean Huijsen and Franco Mastantuono are both available to return from domestic bans, though a start for either player is unlikely.

Manchester City News

One of their five League Phase wins was the aforementioned 2-1 success at Real Madrid – just their second win in eight matches at the Bernabéu (D2 L4) – courtesy of goals from Erling Haaland and Nico O'Reilly. They also beat Napoli, Villarreal, Borussia Dortmund and Galatasaray, winning 2-0 at home to the latter on matchday eight.

Since that victory at the end of January, Pep Guardiola’s side have played nine domestic games, winning seven of those and drawing two. A frustrating 2-2 Premier League draw at home to Nottingham Forest last week has seen them fall seven points behind title rivals Arsenal at the summit. However, a much-changed side responded by beating Newcastle United 3-1 in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday.

As for Man City, Joško Gvardiol (broken tibia) and Mateo Kovačić (ankle/heel injury) are the only two absentees through injury. Guardiola is set to restore a strong line-up after making 10 changes against Newcastle last weekend.

Haaland was rested in that game and is expected to start in attack. The Norwegian striker has scored 56 goals in the UEFA Champions League, including 10 in his last 10 appearances against Spanish opposition — a penalty at the Bernabéu back in December among them.
