Mohamed Salah has criticized Liverpool's playing style and questioned the mentality in the dressing room, which has intensified the pressure on Arne Slot.

On Friday, when his team was defeated 4-2 by Aston Villa, the Liverpool manager exhausted the little remaining trust among some of the club's fans. The scoreline was lenient for last year's champions, who have already lost 20 matches this season.

A major subplot amid this disastrous result has been the breakdown in relations between Slot and Salah. In November last year, the Egyptian was left out of the starting lineup in a 3-3 away draw against Leeds United, and he accused the Dutchman of "throwing him under the bus".

However, many may now feel that Salah's 190-word statement on social media, outlining his views on Liverpool's predicament, the way forward he deems correct, and a mention of Jürgen Klopp, amounts to throwing Slot under the bus once again.

What Did Salah Say?

“I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions. It takes hard work, and I have always gone above and beyond to help the club achieve its goals. Nothing makes me prouder than that. We have suffered another defeat this season, which is extremely painful and not what our fans deserve. I want to see Liverpool return to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear, and back to being a trophy-winning side.

“This is the style of football I know, and these are the traits that need to be restored and maintained permanently. This is non-negotiable, and every player who joins this club should adapt to it. Occasionally winning some matches is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams can win games. Liverpool will always be a club that means a great deal to me and my family. I hope to see it succeed long after I leave. As I have always said, qualifying for next season's UEFA Champions League is the minimum target, and I will do everything I can to achieve it.”

Salah's Comments Liked by Teammate

Salah was signed by Jürgen Klopp from Roma in July 2017. He was asked by The Telegraph Sport at Villa Park if he wanted to talk, but he politely declined the invitation. After a long cool-down period, he was one of the last players to leave the pitch. However, after reflection, Salah used his platform to clearly express his dissatisfaction with the results and declining performances. He is aware of the impact of his words.

Interestingly, the Instagram post was "liked" by Salah's Liverpool teammate Curtis Jones.

This statement is the last thing Slot wants to deal with ahead of next Sunday's match against Brentford, which will also bring an end to Salah's nine-year career at the club.

Salah has been outspoken in recent weeks, giving interviews to several outlets including Sky Sports and TNT Sports, in which he questioned whether the standards achieved during his peak seasons on Merseyside (when they won the UEFA Champions League and Premier League under Klopp) can be maintained.

When asked about Salah's comments on May 8, Slot was clearly unhappy at being perceived as failing to meet the standards. He emphasized that he agreed with the 33-year-old player's views but insisted that creating a good team culture is about more than just being the first to arrive at the gym.
