Mehdi Taj, President of the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI), spoke on Iranian public television, stating his federation’s position on the ongoing conflicts with Israel and the United States since last night.
“Given what has happened today and this strike by the United States, it is unlikely that we can expect the World Cup, but the heads of the sports sector must make the decision.”
On the other hand, the Iranian football chief confirmed that the Iranian league has been suspended with immediate effect until further notice.
According to earlier reports, following US military operations against Iran, FIFA is focused on ensuring every team can participate in this summer’s World Cup.
Iran has already qualified for the World Cup. Under previous arrangements, the team was set to be based in Tucson, Arizona. World Cup officials are closely monitoring developments.
