About J1 League

The J1 League is Japan's highest-tier professional football league, organized annually by the Japan Professional Football League (J.League).

League History

The J1 League traces its roots to the Japan Soccer League founded in 1965, which struggled to gain significant attention. In the late 1980s, the Japan Football Association began planning a new professional league. The inaugural J.League season launched in 1993, with Verdy Kawasaki (now Tokyo Verdy) claiming the first title. In 1999, the league restructured, renaming its top division “J1 League.”

Expansion and Milestones

In 2005, the J1 League expanded to 18 teams. The title race was fiercely contested, with Gamba Osaka winning the championship with 60 points, while the runner-up to 5th place all tied at 59 points .
Kashima Antlers secured their 5th J1 title in 2007 and achieved a three-peat from 2007–2009.
In 2014, Gamba Osaka, newly promoted from the J2 League, won the J1 title in their return season .
Kashima Antlers claimed their 8th championship in 2016, solidifying their status as the league’s most successful club.

Recent Developments

The 2020 season, impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, had no relegation. Kawasaki Frontale dominated, winning by an 18-point margin .
In December 2022, the J.League announced the J1 League would expand to 20 teams starting from the 2024 season, with three clubs relegated each year .
In December 2023, the league confirmed a shift to a cross-year season format (August–May) from the 2026–27 season, aligning with European leagues. A transitional "special season" will be held in the first half of 2026 without promotion/relegation .

Vissel Kobe defended their title in the 2024 season, marking their back-to-back triumphs .
