Everton fear Jack Grealish may require surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot, which could rule him out for the remainder of the season.

The 30-year-old consulted specialists this week after initially being thought to have only a calf problem when he received treatment at the club’s training ground on Monday. Further tests revealed a far more serious issue.

Everton manager David Moyes has given no indication of how long Grealish will be sidelined, but if surgery is needed to fix the injury, his season is almost certainly over – a huge blow both for the player and for Everton.

A lengthy absence would effectively end Grealish’s last remaining hopes of making the World Cup squad, while also robbing Everton of their most creative player at a crucial stage of their push for European qualification.

When asked if surgery might be necessary, Moyes confirmed: “That’s part of the discussion with the surgeons. Obviously, we’re not going to get good news, but I don’t want to give any specific dates at the moment – we’re waiting for the results of several tests.”

“Losing Grealish is a blow. He came in for treatment and didn’t mention any discomfort in his foot. He got a kick on the calf, and we thought he’d be okay. We thought it was just a kick to the back of the calf that would settle down in a few days, but they checked his foot and found a stress fracture.”

“It’s a real shame for the lad – he was just getting back to form, enjoying his football, and doing what he does best. He’s been hugely supported by the Everton fans, who rate him very highly, so it’s disappointing that he’s going to be out for a while.”

The injury also casts doubt over Grealish’s future at Everton, with his loan from Manchester City set to expire at the end of the season and no discussions yet held between the two clubs over a permanent transfer.

Grealish has thrived in Moyes’ side, and despite previously being criticised by the manager for a red card due to losing his temper, the pair have enjoyed an excellent relationship. His absence could force Moyes into action in the transfer window.
