In the first legs of the Champions League round of 16, both Chelsea and Tottenham started their backup goalkeepers and suffered heavy 5-2 defeats.

Tottenham faced Atlético Madrid away. Manager Igor Tudor surprisingly dropped first-choice goalkeeper Vicario and handed a Champions League debut to 22-year-old backup keeper Kinský. However, Kinský made a series of basic mistakes early on, conceding three goals in just 15 minutes. Tottenham eventually lost 5-2, and Kinský was substituted after only 17 minutes.
In the other tie, Chelsea played Paris Saint-Germain away and also started backup goalkeeper Jörgensen. He put in a poor performance throughout the match and was even seen arguing with Enzo Fernández during the game.Jörgensen gifted two goals to the opposition, and although one of those goals was ruled out for offside, Chelsea still crashed to a 5-2 loss.
Both backup goalkeepers performed poorly in these Champions League first-leg ties, gifting a total of four goals to their opponents.
