Germany secured a dominant 7-1 win over Curaçao in its opening FIFA World Cup group stage fixture. Kai Havertz, who was awarded Player of the Match, was interviewed by Brazil’s Cazé TV in the mixed zone. The Brazilian journalist brought up the iconic 7-1 defeat suffered by Brazil at the hands of Germany in 2014. Smiling, Havertz responded that the famous scoreline has become part of German football history, and it is also extraordinary to start this World Cup journey with the exact same result.

Journalist: Hello Kai, congratulations first of all. As you can tell, I am Brazilian, and that 7-1 result left us with extremely painful memories. Do you still remember the 2014 match against Brazil? How do you feel about scoring a 7-1 win yourself today?

Kai Havertz: Of course I remember it well. Obviously, it was an agonising day for all Brazilians, while that night is still fresh in my mind as a German. I believe that result has been written into the most glorious chapters of German football history. And it is truly something special to kick off our World Cup with a win by the same score today.

Journalist: We also saw some fans in the stands wearing commemorative jerseys printed with that 7-1 score. Maybe they had a premonition.

Kai Havertz: That’s right. Now they will need to get a new one for this game against Curaçao. Still, those are all wonderful memories. Today’s match was also a fantastic spectacle for you guys.

Journalist: Before the game, many people discussed whether you could play alongside another attacking player at the same time. You two have proved it works today. What is your opinion on this?

Kai Havertz: We have plenty of star talents and outstanding players across the squad. A World Cup campaign can feature up to eight games all the way to the final, so I think we will need every single team member. We all witnessed how brilliant he is today; he stays calm in front of goal and it is a real pleasure to play alongside him. We boast numerous elite players and have great flexibility to adjust our lineups.
