After Bayern Munich defeated Stuttgart 4-2 to claim their 35th Bundesliga title in club history, 40-year-old Vincent Kompany gathered the entire team in the dressing room to deliver a championship speech, emphasizing: Every title is the first one!

"None of you should take for granted the privilege of playing for such a united and successful team!" the Bayern manager told his players.

The Belgian then named players: Leonard Karl (18), Luis Diaz (29), Nicolas Jackson (24), Tom Bischof (20), as well as young talents like Bara Sapoko Ndiaye (18) and Deniz Ofli (19), along with several other young professionals who made their debuts this season.

Kompany said all of them had just lifted the Bundesliga trophy for the first time. Everyone else should learn from them.

Kompany then declared: “Each of you should celebrate this 35th league title as if it were your first.”

But he added: “Celebrate, of course, but not yet! This is absolutely not the right time to celebrate.”

After all, the DFB-Pokal semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen is already scheduled for Wednesday. Following that, they will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-finals.

It is precisely because of remarks like these that Bayern stars admire their coach so much. And the club's senior management's appreciation for him goes far beyond that.

So what exactly is Kompany's championship secret?

Team Spirit

The current atmosphere within the team reminds Bayern's top brass of the treble-winning season in 2013. This is all thanks to Kompany. The Belgian coach is approachable and empathetic, often taking considerable time after training to engage in one-on-one conversations with players.

Kompany cares not only about football itself but also about things off the pitch. One of his most frequently asked questions is: “How is your family?”

Meticulous Training

Kompany carefully designs on-field training sessions, adjusting the content in a progressive manner. He links training to match scenarios, deliberately avoiding excessive theory or artificially contrived situations.

Sometimes, Kompany will interrupt training, call a player aside, and provide direct feedback on the field: what he needs to improve and what aspects he is doing well? The coach gives clear instructions, sets goals for his star players, and shows them the direction he

wants them to develop.

"He always reminds us: whenever you step on the pitch, you have to give more than 100%," confirmed 21-year-old Alexander Pavlovic.

Carrot and Stick Approach

Kompany possesses complete authority. Furthermore, he can also show a tough and provocative side when the situation demands it. Every player knows their place under Kompany.

Unlike his predecessors, he allows players to use large speakers during warm-ups, usually playing energetic hip-hop music, which has been well-received by the entire team. The coach also shows a tough side at times—such as in the case of 17-year-old “Wisdom Mike.”

During a team meeting last summer, the talented Mike made a surprising mistake. The gifted left winger actually fell asleep in the front row of the auditorium during the morning team meeting. The club stated that Mike had stayed out late in Munich with another player the night before, and that player was later loaned out. Mike himself reportedly did not deny this, but Kompany did not publicly criticize his protégé in front of the entire team.

He told Mike that he now had to raise his game and that such incidents must never happen again. Mike took Kompany's words to heart, worked tirelessly for his Bundesliga dream, and finally made his debut on September 26, 2025, in Bayern Munich's 4-0 victory over Werder Bremen.

As Kompany sent him on, he also winked and said: “You deserve this—but don't get complacent!”

Since then, the winger has made five first-team appearances. Although Kompany mainly acted as a confidant to Mike in the incident, he handed over the crisis meeting with Mike to Sporting Director Christoph Freund (48).

Bayern reportedly imposed a punishment on Mike at the time, requiring the young player to move out of the team dormitory for a week and stay in a hotel at his own expense. Mike's father was also summoned for a meeting.

Since then, the currently injured young talent is believed to have recovered. The matter was resolved because Kompany did not let the situation escalate further.

Meticulous Preparation: Long, Intensive, and Comprehensive Preparation Work

In stark contrast, Kompany and his coaching staff conduct video analysis almost every day to prepare training content or study upcoming opponents. They often sit together for long hours before and after training, using video materials to refine tactics and processes.

Close-Knit Coaching Team

For example, Kompany shares a very special, almost brotherly relationship with Bayern Munich's team manager Rodis Munninger (40). The two have known each other since childhood and lived in the same building in Brussels during their teenage years. When

Kompany moved to Hamburg at the age of 20, Munninger moved there as well.

Just one year later, Kompany's mother passed away. Munninger stayed by his side the entire time, helping him through this difficult period.

In 2008, Kompany moved to Manchester City. Having played for City for eleven years, even serving as captain during Pep Guardiola's (55) tenure, Kompany is now regarded as one of the club's greatest legends.

Possible Return to Manchester City

Despite Kompany extending his contract with Bayern Munich early until 2029 (October 21, 2025), Manchester City still views the former player as a top candidate to succeed Pep Guardiola.

The English club hopes that if Kompany can win the treble in his second season at Bayern, the Belgian international will seek a new challenge.

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen (58) firmly denied such speculation. “We just extended Vincent's contract, which is why this question is being asked...”

"We haven't given this matter any thought at all," the CEO clarified to the media.

"Furthermore, I am convinced that Vincent thinks through everything thoroughly before making any decision and considers all possible scenarios that could call that decision into question," Dreesen continued. “So I am 100% certain that he must have asked himself this question before making his decision. His answer was to extend his contract, and therefore, it doesn't matter who else is interested or how many titles we might win in the future.”

Winning the Champions League would also bring substantial financial rewards for Kompany. The coach reportedly included a €1 million championship bonus in his new contract.
