Real Madrid lost 0-1 at home to Getafe in Round 26 of La Liga, suffering two consecutive La Liga defeats. Spanish media have reported that Arbeloa’s position as head coach is under heavy scrutiny.

Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa’s position has become increasingly precarious following the club’s 0-1 home defeat to Getafe, after boos rang out around the Santiago Bernabéu alongside chants calling for Florentino Pérez to resign. This toxic atmosphere at Real Madrid has almost always signalled instability in the head coach role, and can even foreshadow an imminent dismissal.

Arbeloa took charge of the club on 12 January, replacing Xabi Alonso. Since his appointment, he has overseen 12 matches and suffered 4 defeats, against Albacete, Benfica, Osasuna and Getafe, with a far from impressive record. By contrast, his predecessor Alonso lost just 6 of his 34 matches in charge between his appointment last summer and the FIFA Club World Cup, with all those defeats coming against elite sides including Paris Saint-Germain, Atlético Madrid, Liverpool, Celta Vigo, Manchester City and Barcelona.

While the club’s hierarchy has doubts over Arbeloa’s capabilities, no immediate decision to sack him has been made in the short term.

Reporter: Is there a real possibility that Álvaro Arbeloa will not see out the season as Real Madrid head coach, and what would trigger his dismissal?

Club Insider: There is a chance he will not be able to lead the team through to the end of the season. If Real Madrid are eliminated from both La Liga and the Champions League in the coming weeks, the pressure will become unbearable, and it is usually the head coach who pays the price with their job.

This Friday’s away La Liga fixture against Celta Vigo, followed by the Champions League Round of 16 first leg at home to Manchester City five days later, have been marked as make-or-break matches. Should results continue to deteriorate, Arbeloa’s position in the dugout will become even more untenable.

The 43-year-old Spanish coach has failed to win the unanimous backing of the dressing room since his appointment. A section of the playing squad believe he is better suited to coaching Real Madrid Castilla rather than the first team, and have questioned his tactical and man-management abilities. That said, Real Madrid’s senior hierarchy also lack an ideal replacement candidate at present. An emergency option that has been mooted is the club’s current sporting director Santiago Solari, though his track record is similar to Arbeloa’s. If the club do opt to make a change, the hierarchy would prefer to bring in a more high-profile coach to see out the remainder of the season.

Jürgen Klopp is viewed as one potential candidate. The German coach, who currently works within the Red Bull system, has long been admired by Florentino Pérez and has previously featured on Real Madrid’s shortlist for the head coach role. However, the hierarchy have concerns that his uncompromising coaching style and tactical philosophy may not be a good fit for the current squad, and that his strong personality could lead to friction.

In addition, the contract renewal of Vinícius Júnior is a key factor influencing the club’s decision-making. The 25-year-old Brazilian forward’s contract runs until 2027; he previously paused renewal talks during Alonso’s tenure, with negotiations now having reopened. Should the new head coach appointment not meet his expectations, the talks could be derailed once again.

Real Madrid currently sit 2nd in La Liga, 4 points behind Barcelona. Unless the club go on to win either La Liga or the Champions League, there is little chance of Arbeloa remaining in his post beyond the end of the season. However, there is a widespread belief within the club that the players, rather than the head coach, are primarily responsible for the current situation.
