Borussia Dortmund have officially announced that 30-year-old centre-back Niklas Süle will retire from professional football at the end of the season due to injury problems.

Niklas Süle will bring his professional football career to a close after the final matchday of the 2025/26 season. His contract with Borussia Dortmund is set to expire on 30 June 2026.
"I would like to announce that I will be ending my career this summer," Süle stated on the podcast "Spielmacher" (Playmaker). The idea of hanging up his boots had been on Süle's mind for a long time, but the final decision was made after the match against TSG Hoffenheim, where he suffered a knee injury.
"When our team doctor performed the drawer test (a medical test used to diagnose cruciate ligament tears) in the Hoffenheim dressing room, then looked at the physiotherapist and shook his head, and the physiotherapist did the same test and also felt no resistance, I went into the shower and cried for ten minutes, thinking I had torn my ACL," Süle recalled the 30th round match on the podcast. “The next day I went for an MRI scan, and when I received the good news (that it wasn't actually an ACL tear), I was one thousand percent certain that it was all over. I had been looking forward to life after retirement - being free, going on holiday, spending time with my children - and I couldn't imagine anything worse than having to go through a third cruciate ligament tear.”
Süle joined Borussia Dortmund from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022. The centre-back made a total of 109 appearances for the "Black and Yellows" (scoring 3 goals). His first season at Dortmund was particularly memorable. “What I experienced in my first year, when we almost won the championship - that night in the hotel, the journey to the stadium. The feeling I had then was probably only matched by what I felt before my first professional match - that tension and excitement. It was one of the most overwhelming moments I've ever experienced, before the match against Mainz. I don't know if I'll ever experience that feeling again in my life - that adrenaline rush.”
In Süle's first season, Borussia Dortmund narrowly missed out on the Bundesliga title. In his second season, he reached the UEFA Champions League final with the team. “When I look back on my four years at Dortmund, there are many moments that brought me joy. The chats in the dressing room, that stadium - we're talking about 80,000 fans. The supporters always welcomed me with open arms. I will miss this time very much, and the comfortable feeling I had here. I experienced the characteristics of Dortmund people on my first day: open, warm, sincere. This gave me a great sense of belonging. My children go to kindergarten here. It will be really difficult for us to leave.”
