Manchester City winger Jack Grealish has confirmed his season-long loan at Everton is over early after undergoing surgery on a foot injury. The 30-year-old suffered a stress fracture in his foot on January 18, and he is “devastated” at having his campaign cut short.
Grealish joined Everton on a season-long loan from Man City this term, making 22 appearances across all competitions and contributing 2 goals and 6 assists, with his form earning wide praise. He picked up the injury in last month’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa, dealing a heavy blow to his season.
Posting a photo of himself in a hospital bed on social media, Grealish wrote:“I didn’t want this season to end like this, but that’s football and I’m absolutely gutted. The surgery is done and my full focus is on getting fit. I can promise I’ll be back fitter, stronger and better than ever.”
“The support I’ve had since joining this incredible club means everything. The staff, teammates and especially the fans have been unbelievable, and I’ve loved every minute of representing this club. I’ll be cheering the lads on every step of the way and doing everything I can to be back as soon as possible. Thank you again for all the love, it means the world.”
His post was flooded with support from the football world, with Man City striker Erling Haaland, Man Utd defender Harry Maguire, Everton midfielder Dobbin Hall, England internationals Declan Rice and Morgan Rogers among those sending well wishes. Arsenal defender Jarrad Branthwaite, Burnley’s Kyle Walker, Tottenham midfielder James Maddison, Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Brentford captain Jordan Henderson also offered their support.
Grealish left Man City this season in search of regular game time, hoping to secure a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup. He had recaptured his best form at Everton and become a fan favourite, only for injury to end his campaign early.
Speaking about the injury last month, Everton boss David Moyes said:“This is hugely disappointing for the player, the club and all of us. He’s been a massive part of the group, a huge character in the dressing room and brings great experience. We’ll miss him. He’s done so many fantastic things for us.
