Despite the current escalating tensions in the Middle East, Qatar still hopes the Finalissima match will take place as scheduled. However, a final decision will not be confirmed until later this week.

The Finalissima between Spain and Argentina was originally set to be held in Qatar. The Qatari government still wishes to stage the match as planned, with a final ruling expected before the weekend. This fixture is one of the key events of Qatar’s Football Week, so the Qatari government has the primary say on whether the match goes ahead.

Qatar must first confirm its intention (whether to host the Finalissima on time) and inform the two continental confederations involved – UEFA and CONMEBOL. These two bodies will then pass the information to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the Argentine Football Association (AFA).

For now, the RFEF can only wait for a decision from all parties. Nevertheless, it has already started working on backup plans, which will only be formally proposed if Qatar completely gives up hosting rights. The AFA is in the same waiting position.

Yesterday, Álvaro de Miguel, General Secretary of the RFEF, told multiple media outlets that exact information on the Finalissima is needed as soon as possible to make appropriate arrangements.

Specifically, if the Finalissima is postponed, the Spanish national team will need to find other friendly opportunities during this international break. This will be the last match window before the World Cup, allowing teams to play two fixtures.
