Argentina 2-0 Austria: Lionel Messi Brace Makes Him All-Time Top Scorer in World Cup History

The second Group J fixture of the FIFA World Cup between Argentina and Austria was held at AT&T Stadium. Both sides won their opening group matches.

In the first half, Lautaro Martínez won an early penalty, yet Lionel Messi missed the spot kick.

 David Alaba made two crucial goal-line clearances before Nahuel Medina set up Messi for a calm tap-in. This strike was Messi’s 17th World Cup goal, crowning him the all-time leading World Cup goalscorer; he also scored in six consecutive World Cup matches. 

The first half ended with Argentina leading Austria 1-0.In the second half, Emiliano Martínez pulled off a brilliant save. 

Messi grabbed a stoppage-time goal, his 18th World Cup strike, to seal the victory. 

Argentina beat Austria 2-0 and qualified for the knockout stage one match early. Argentina will face Jordan in their final group game, while Austria’s last group opponent will be Algeria.
