The German national team’s press squad writes a column on Neuer — will he actually make a comeback?

Who will be Germany’s goalkeeper at the World Cup?
Oliver Baumann (35) of Hoffenheim is currently the first-choice goalkeeper, having never featured at a World Cup before. He has delivered outstanding performances this season and is now highly likely to start in the World Cup, having been the undisputed number one for six consecutive international matches.
Manuel Neuer praised Baumann: “He is the number one now and he is doing an excellent job. His overall displays have been brilliant, and of course, I keep my fingers crossed for him and wish him all the best.”
Can Marc-André ter Stegen still be selected?
Recent controversies surrounding Marc-André ter Stegen (33) have reignited the debate over Neuer.
The long-time second-choice goalkeeper returned from a lengthy injury lay-off and moved from Barcelona – where he had been effectively sidelined – to Girona in January this year, hoping to earn match minutes ahead of the World Cup.
However, he suffered another thigh injury in just his second game. He underwent surgery and is set to be sidelined for several months. Even if he recovers in time for the World Cup, his chances of a call-up look extremely slim for now. Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann (38) has made it clear that match practice is a prerequisite for selection.
What role has Nagelsmann played in the decision over Neuer?
Speculation has long surrounded the relationship between Nagelsmann and Neuer. When Neuer initially stepped away from the Germany national team, Nagelsmann was reported to favour a permanent split, while Neuer considered taking a break and potentially returning for the next major tournament.
Until recently, it was widely rumoured in Neuer’s inner circle that he would accept a World Cup call-up if Nagelsmann contacted him directly with a clear invitation.
This was why the goalkeeper had previously remained reserved in his comments about the World Cup. But the situation has now changed. It has become increasingly clear that Nagelsmann’s stance is firm, and he will not be persuaded by experts to recall Neuer.
Is Neuer’s return completely impossible?
Only a full-blown goalkeeping crisis could force a change of heart. Barring multiple injuries to Germany’s goalkeepers or a severe crisis, Manuel Neuer’s chapter as Germany’s national team goalkeeper – barring a miracle – is over!
